Written in 1939, it narrates the harrowing existence of a Jewish woman in the Vienna of 1938, after the annexation of Austria to the Nazi Germany. Emma, the protagonist, talks to her dead husband and explains how he has become a victim and spectator of the changes that have taken place, as well as remembering other happier moments, with him and his son Samuel.
