The team coached by Juanjo Susín, after winning again the Spanish University Championship in León the last April, goes to this European tournament with the objective of “using this opportunity to represent in the best way the university volleyball and the UV as the highest expression of sport in which we have competed”. For the coach it is “an honour and a great responsibility, because we represent our country being the current champions, and our athletes know it too well”.

As for what lies ahead for the competition, Susín states that “we don’t know, the draw will be made on the same Sunday we arrive and although we know the competition system, do not know the level of our rivals. There are 14 teams arranged in 4 groups and only the 2 first of each group will pass the next round, the rest will compete for the 9th and 14th place. The competition system is fine because you play one game per day, with one day of rest throughout the competition. As we do not know the rivals, we will go as usual, game by game, starting with the first day and fighting until the end. This is a long championship and we will know the other teams better later on, although we expect the maximum level.” The coach seems humble “at this level the competition itself commands respect. It is a unique opportunity, it’s not just a trophy. It is a European Championship, and our group rarely has participated in a championship with this international level, so it is a unique opportunity, specially if we consider the successful last two years (twice Spanish university champions). It is a new challenge that we must face as humble as possible. We must not forget that there are 14 champions, not only us, therefore we will try to compete and enjoy as much as possible”.
