The López Piñero Institute for the History of Medicine and Science (mixed centre of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Valencia), with headquarters in the Palau of Cerveró and the Cinema Club of the UV Chair present the cinematographic season El psicoanálisis en el divan (The psychoanalysis on the couch). The season shall begin next Thurdsday 11 April with the projection of the film Freud, the Secret Passion, John Huston, EEUU, 1962). We will be able to watch the film 'Geheimnisse einer Seele' (Secrets of a Soul), G.W. Pabs, Germany, 1926) on Thurdsday 18. The next week, 25 April, the projection Prendimi l’anima (The Soul Keeper), Roberto Faenza, Italy, 2002) will take place. And to close the season, the film The Son’s Room (La Stanza del figlio, Nanni Moretti, Italy, 2001) will be projected on Thurdsday 2 May.
The projections, that will take place on Thurdsdays indicated at 18:00 in the conference room of the Palau of Cerveró, will be in original version with subtitles in Spanish. Each session will count on a previous presentation in the care of the Cinema Club of the University and a scientific expert in the subject. Also, the screening of the film will be followed by a talk in which the attending public will be able to participate. The season will tackle the psychoanalysis study focused on the desires, feelings, and fears of the persons, that is, in his emotional development. That is, therefore, a progressive process towards the emotional maturity, addressed to the discovery of the ego. The figure of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) will be analysed, without a doubt, the major exponent of the psychoanalysis.
In the first session it will be projected Freud, the Secret Passion. It is a pseudo-biographic film that describes five years of the life of the Viennese psychologist Freud, between 1885 and 1890. At that time, many of his colleagues refused to treat patients with hysteria, because they thought that they feigned clinical symptoms to draw the attention. But Freud learnt to use the hypnosis in order to find the reasons of his psychosis. In this case, his patient is a young girl who refuses to drink water and suffers from recurring nightmares that torment her. The script was supervised by the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.
In the sesión of Thurdsday 18 April it is presented the film Geheimnisse einer Seele (Secrets of a Soul). Martin Fellman, a scientific, feels an irrational fear of knives and feels an uncontrollable boost in murdering his wife. Being about to be driven to insanity because of his nightmares he suffers, he finds a psychoanalyst who offers him help to heal his mind.
Next Thurdsday, 25 April, the feature film Prendimi l’anima (The Soul Keeper) will be shown. Doctor Jung attends to Spielrein, a young girl of Jewish origin in a psychiatric hospital. In the treatment they begin a romance through the psychoanalysis, where Jung seeks support from Freud. For his part, Spielrein gets well, studies medicine and becomes the first psychoanalyst woman in Switzerland, going through a process from child to adult woman and from patient to doctor.
Finally, on Thursday 2 May, the season closes with the film The Son’s Room that tells the story in a small city of Northern Italy of a family formed by the parents (Giovanni and Paola) and two teenage children: Irene, the older, and Andrea, the younger. Giovanni is a psychoanalyst. In his consultating room, placed next to his apartment, his patients entrust him their neurosis that contrast with the calm of his own existence. His life is ruled by a series of habits or interests: reading, listening to music, isolating himself and becoming himself exhausted doing long races over the city. One Sunday morning, a patient calls Giovanni for an emergency. He cannot jogging with his son, as he had proposed him; Andrea goes for a dive with his friends, but he won’t come back…
