In Rome, during the summer, decadent nobles, careerists, politicians, high-flying criminals, journalists, actors, prelates, artists and intellectuals weave a web of inconsistent relationships developed in lavish palaces and villas. The centre of all meetings is Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo), a 65-year old writer who wrote just one book and works as journalist. Dominated by indolence and boredom, he is part of a parade of powerful but pointless, empty and depressing characters.
