The gauge/gravity correspondence is a technique which allows the study of strongly interacting quantum systems by using higher-dimensional gravity. This correspondence (also known as "holographic duality" or "AdS/CFT correspondence") has led to new insights into subjects such as gauge theories, condensed matter physics, hydrodynamics and quantum information theory. I will review in simple terms the present status of the correspondence, as well as its origin in the context of string theory.
