The Institute of History of Medicine and Science 'López Piñero' (joint mission of the University of Valencia and the CSIC) based on the Palacio de Cerveró (Palace of Cerveró), presents the seminar "Dr. Ramón Gómez Ferrer (1862-1924) and the origins of Pediatrics in Valencia", which will take place on the next Thursday 18 of December, at 19:00, in the assembly hall of the Institute. The seminar will be run by Elvira Ramos, tenured professor of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health of the University of Murcia.

This conferece belongs to the group of commemorative events of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the pediatrician Ramón Gómez Ferrer. Renowned Valencian doctor that obtained the first Chair of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine of Valencia during 36 years. He got his degree in Medicine from the University of Valencia, afterwards, he was appointed Associate Professor in the University of Madrid, he would return definitely to Valencia as a Professor in Pediatrics. Additionally, he chaired the "Real Academia de Medicina" (Royal Academy of Medicine) and was nominated "Honorary Citizen" of the City of Valencia.

Doctor Gómez Ferrer remained, until his death, committed with social problems, he worked on issues such as juvenile courts, the education of well-child and ill-child, and served as a mamber of the Committee for Safeguarding Children. During the last decade of his life he made an effort to carry out two projects that did not came to be: the foundation of a Children's Hospital in his home town and the building of an institute of "Nipiology", that is, the interdisciplinar study of all the issues relative to the early childhood.

On the other hand, and also within the frame of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Gómez Ferrer, at the end of February the exhibition "Childhood, Health and Illness: Dr. Gómez Ferrer (1862-1924)" will be officially open. The exhibition, that will count with the fundings of the private collection of the family, has been organised by the Office of the Vice Principal of Culture and Equality of the University of Valencia, the Higher Council of Scientific Research and the Institute of History of Medicine and Science "López Piñero".
