Open deadline for communication proposals for The Borgias in art. The congress will study the realised artistic recreation of the Borgia popes and their family during all the ages and from all the arts.

1st Congress XÀTIVA: HISTORY, CULTURE and IDENTITY

The Borgias in art (Literature, theatre, painting. sculpture, cinema, television, music)

The city hall of Xàtiva, with the collaboration of the Universitat de València and the Institut Internacional d’Estudis Borgians, announces the first congress: “Xàtiva: history, culture and identity” dedicated, in this initial edition, to the artistic recreations of the Borgia popes and their family during all the ages.

The congress will take place in the Sant Domènec monastery of the city of Xàtiva during the days 5, 6 and 7 of May 2016.

The researchers of the different specialities (art, history, philology, audio-visual communication, music, humanities...) who want to participate in the congress with a 20 minutes speech, can send their proposals to be evaluated to the mail congresxativa@gmail.com. The application form attached to the call must be filled in.

The deadline for the presentation of proposals is the 31 of January 2016. The organisation will inform the selected researchers the resolution of the scientific committee within 15 days. The speakers do not have to pay the participation fee and will be in minute detail evaluated.

This meeting of researchers has as the main objective to analyse the reception of the figures of the Borgia, since their time until the present, through the different artistic manifestations inspired by the famous Valencian family.

What concept spread the cinema about the Borgia? How are popes represented in literature? How does the television, the opera or the theatre influenced to consolidate the famous “black legend” surrounding this dynasty? Which modern artistic expressions were interested in the Borgia and from what perspective? Which part is fantasy and which historical documentation in the artistic representations surrounding the most international surname of Xàtiva?

Definitely, the congress is about studying what type of recreation of the Borgia has been made and is made from the different artistic discourses in order to observe in which way the concept “Borgia” has been stablished in the international collective imaginary, beyond the proven historic realities. We will try to answer the following question: How has the art represented and used the Borgia? All the communications following this line and offering innovative views about the topic, will be welcomed.

Date From 2 december 2015 to 31 january 2016. 24h. Every day.
