EXPLORING NEW READING HABITS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH READING COMPREHENSION

Lidia Altamura

Universitat de València

The present dissertation has explored new reading habits and their relationship with reading comprehension, with a particular interest on digital reading habits. It consists of studies: Study 1 presents a meta-analysis that examined the relationship between digital reading habits and reading comprehension. Study 2, which was motivated by the considerable heterogeneity observed in the measurement of digital reading habits in Study 1, presents the development of an instrument designed to capture children’s reading habits differentiating between reading media (print and digital) and reading purpose (leisure and academic). After having validated this instrument, we employed it in a longitudinal study, representing Study 3 in which we examined the dynamic relationships between digital reading habits (leisure and academic), reading comprehension and intrinsic reading motivation over time.
