INSTRUCCIONS AND DEADLINES
In accordance with the “Regulations for the Bachelor Thesis and Master Thesis” of the University of Valencia, the Master Thesis (TFM, for its acronym in Spanish) consists of the completion of a report or project under the guidance of a supervisor, designed to demonstrate the knowledge and competencies acquired throughout the degree program.
TFM projects are offered annually based on proposals submitted by faculty members and researchers from the departments and research institutes participating in the Master’s program. Students select their project during the first term and carry out the work, ideally, during the second term of the academic year. Each student is assigned at least one academic supervisor, who oversees the development of the project and ensures its scientific and methodological coherence.
Instructions for completing the TFM
The TFM must be submitted as a written report—drafted in Spanish, Valencian, or English—adhering to the style and length guidelines established by the Master’s program coordination. Students must present and defend their Master Thesis before an examination committee (tribunal) appropriate to the project’s specialization and content. These committees are appointed by the Academic Coordination Commission (CCA) of the Master in Advanced Physics. The TFM report must be submitted via the ENTREU platform, using the procedure: “EST_TFM - Submission of the Master Thesis”
With the aim of ensuring a consistent standard and facilitating the work of the examination committees, the CCA offers the following recommendations:
- The content of the Master Thesis should be such that it can be completed by the student within the second term.
- As examples, and depending on the speciality chosen by the student, a Master Thesis may consist in:
- The assimilation and presentation of a review related to the intended PhD thesis topic.
- An in-depth exploration of a topic covered in one of the Master’s program courses, going beyond the level addressed during the course itself.
- The development of exploratory exercises related to the PhD thesis topic.
- The execution of an experiment or observation—or, if the complexity warrants it, the preparation and design thereof.
- The Master Thesis report must not, under any circumstances, exceed 50 pages in length.
- The report must be written using a font size and line spacing that ensure readability.
- The first page must follow the template approved by the Academic Coordinating Committee (CCA), which is available on the Master’s program website.
- The report must have a clear structure and include a relevant bibliography, as well as appendices, if applicable.
- The Academic Coordinating Committee (CCA) for the Master’s in Advanced Physics recommends that the presentation of the Master’s Thesis last approximately 20 minutes, with a subsequent discussion period not exceeding another 20 minutes.
- Students may prepare their Master’s Thesis report and presentation in Spanish, Valencian, or English.
