The Lise Meitner Graduate Room of the Faculty of Physics has welcomed today Thursday at 6 p.m., with reduced capacity and streaming broadcasting, the award ceremony of the XXXII Physics Olympics, an international competition in which students from numerous countries and organised by the Royal Spanish Physical Society (RSEF) in its state phase. The University of Valencia –through the Faculty of Physics and the Delegation for Incorporation into the University–, and the Polytechnic University are in charge of the Valencian phase, held on February 25 and consisting of a written test of Physics problems and exercises.

The four awarded students are Leonardo Costa Lesage (IES Pere Boïl de Manises); Pablo Faus Faus (IES María Enríquez de Gandia); Marco Nieto Pérez (IES el Ravatxol de València); and Javier Cardells Peris (Colegio CEU San Pablo de Montcada). The two substitutes are Alberto Mateos Roig (IES Joanot Martorell de València) and Andreu Moll Morera (IES Gabriel Ciscar d’Oliva). The female teachers and male teacher of the awarded students are, respectively, Nieves Fernández, Mari Carmen Salvador, Isabel María Padín, Vicente Aparicio, Mercedes Cabria and Dolores Costa.

Baccalaureate students who participate in this test are eligible for local prizes that include, among others, 1,000 euros for each student when they enrol at the UV. In addition, they can extend their participation in the national phase and in the international phase (the latter scheduled in Lithuania from July 17 to 25, in a face-to-face or online mixed modality) and the Ibero-American phase (in Brazil, in September). The national phase was scheduled in Lugo from April 23 to 26, but it will be done online on April 23, as was also the 2020 edition.

Of the group of 52 students from 22 different centres who participated in the October pre-selection test, 23 received a physics course of more than 72 hours taught by teachers from the two universities, prior to the local test of the competition. Since this year, and as a consequence of a global reduction in classified people at the state level, only the first four go to the national phase.

The awards and diplomas have been delivered by the Vice-Rector for Employment and Training Programs of the UV, Adela Valero; the dean of the Faculty of Physics, Jordi Vidal; the president of the local section of the RSEF, Ana Cros; and Juan Miguel García Gómez, deputy director of the Department of Applied Physics of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, representing the Vice-Rector for Students, Culture and Sports, José Luis Cueto. Also has participated, for the local organising committee of the Physics Olympics, the professors of the University of Valencia Chantal Ferrer and M.ª Jesús Hernández, as well as a representation of the faculty of the Faculty of Physics that has taught the course.
