The unit's researchers are dedicated to the study of the pathogenic mechanisms and the cellular and molecular bases of diseases of the visual system, including the following lines of research: diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, development and congenital malformations of the visual system, prevention of glaucomatous blindness, and nutrition and eye health. UIO [Ophthalmology Research Unit] Units Cellular ophthalmobiology unit: cell biology of the eyeball and optic nerve, Molecular ophthalmobiology unit: molecular biology and genetics of the eyeball and optic nerve, Translational Ophthalmology Research Unit and Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences Biochemistry Unit.
- Diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy: study of risk factors associated with retinopathies, from a genetic, molecular and cellular point of view, to prevent blindness caused by these pathologies.
- Research on development and congenital malformations of the visual system: to deepen the knowledge of the etiopathogenic mechanisms that lead to the appearance and development of congenital malformations of the visual system in order to prevent the associated complications and vision loss.
- Prevention of glaucomatous blindness: understanding the molecular, cellular, and genetic bases of glaucomatous optic neuropathy to help us identify specific biomarkers for this disease and prevent blindness.
- Nutrition and eye health: a study of nutrition and other lifestyle habits in relation to eye health.
- Macular diseases: to deepen our understanding of the molecular and genetic basis of macular diseases in order to find biomarkers that will help us develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for these diseases.
- Prevention of glaucomatous blindness.Glaucoma research. Identification of genes and molecules involved in glaucoma. Cellular bases of glaucomatous disease. Application of omic sciences to the study of glaucoma.
- Diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy research.Identification of genes and molecules involved in the ocular complications of diabetes mellitus. Oxidative stress. Cellular bases of retinopathies.
- Research on development and congenital malformations of the visual system.Identification of genes and molecules involved in the development of the eyeball and optic nerve. Effect of pre- and postnatal exposure to alcohol and drugs on the development of the visual system.
- Nutrition and eye health.Study of nutrition and eating disorders on the visual system. Nutrition, vitamins, antioxidants, eye diseases and eating disorders (obesity and anorexia nervosa).
- Macular deseases.Study of macular pathology and its impact on visual acuity and quality of life.
