The unit's researchers are dedicated to the study of the pathogenic mechanisms and the cellular and molecular bases of diseases of the visual system, including the following lines of research: diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, development and congenital malformations of the visual system, prevention of glaucomatous blindness, and nutrition and eye health. • Retinopatia diabetica e hipertensiva: estudio de factores de riesgo asociados a las retinopatías, desde un punto de vista genético, molecular y celular, para prevenir la ceguera causada por estas patologías.
• Investigación en desarrollo y malformaciones congénitas del sistema visual: profundizar en el conocimiento de los mecanismos etiopatogénicos que llevan a la aparición y desarrollo de malformaciones congénitas del sistema visual para poder prevenir las complicaciones y pérdidas de visión asociadas.
• Prevención de la ceguera glaucomatosa: conocer las bases moleculares, celulares y genéticas de la neuropatía óptica glaucomatosa que nos ayuden en la identificación de biomarcadores específicos de esta enfermedad y prevenir la ceguera.
• Nutrición y salud ocular: estudio de la nutrición y otros hábitos de estilo de vida en relación a la salud ocular.
• Enfermedades de la mácula: profundizar en el conocimiento de las bases moleculares y genéticas de las enfermedades de la mácula con el fin de encontrar biomarcadores que nos ayuden a desarrollar nuevas estrategias diagnósticas y terapéuticas para estas enfermedades.

• Research on development and congenital malformations of the visual system.Identification of genes and molecules involved in the development of the eyeball and optic nerve. Effect of pre- and postnatal exposure to alcohol and drugs on the development of the visual system.
• Nutrition and eye health.Study of nutrition and eating disorders on the visual system. Nutrition, vitamins, antioxidants, eye diseases and eating disorders (obesity and anorexia nervosa).
• Macular deseases.Study of macular pathology and its impact on visual acuity and quality of life.
