Defect Engineering of Responsive Advanced Materials - DREAM

Description of research activity:

Our research focuses on the development and modulation of advanced reticular materials, such as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs), and Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs), with potential applications in health and the environment. We specialize in Multivariate Modulation (MTVM), an innovative synthetic approach that combines heterogeneity and defect engineering to introduce specific functionalities into these materials. Through this technique, we are able to create structures with larger and more complex pores, enhancing properties such as reactivity and porosity without compromising structural stability. Additionally, we study in situ nucleation and crystallization mechanisms to control the self-assembly process and fine-tune material properties for targeted applications. Our research covers applications in water contaminant filtration, energy generation through photocatalysis, and controlled drug delivery, addressing global challenges such as access to clean energy, safe drinking water, and more effective medical treatments.
