Full university professor Isabel Fariñas.

The Professor of Cell Biology and Parasitology and coordinator of the Degree in Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, University of Valencia, Isabel Fariñas, has been appointed as a new member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), whose members include leading researchers in the field of molecular biology worldwide.

This prestigious institution elects, each year, new members among researchers in the various branches of molecular biosciences based on excellence of the scientific work developed. EMBO, created in 1964, brings together 1600 of the best molecular biologists and their incorporation in the entity is for life.

Researcher Isabel Fariñas sees the integration to EMBO as "an important recognition to the scientific work we do and it's also a great honor to belong to such a distinguished group of scientists. Moreover, this appointment also links our University to an umbrella organization of the most academic institutions." The teacher points out that the members of this institution contribute with their scientific knowledge to define research priorities in life sciences in Europe, participating in committees that organise EMBO's activities and can also mentor young researchers. The main objectives of the organization are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, to encourage the exchange of scientific information and help build a European research environment that fosters scientific work.

Among the new members elected by EMBO this year are 43 scientists working in Europe. Isabel Fariñas, from the University of Valencia, Luciano Di Croce, from the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona, and Paloma Mas, from the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) of Barcelona, join the 63 members of the organization already working in Spain. In addition, other new researchers developing their careers in the United States, Canada, China and Japan have been appointed associate members this 2013.

Isabel Fariñas is a member of the board of the Spanish Society of Gene and Cell Therapy and the International Society of Differentiation and directs the Molecular Neurobiology Unit of the University of Valencia, which is investigating the regulation of brain stem cells in adults and their possible therapeutic potential. The group belongs to the ERIC / ISIC Biotechnology and Biomedicine of the University of Valencia, to the National Network of Cellular Therapy (RETIC Tercel) and the Center for Biomedical Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIBERNED). It is also Prometheus 2008 Excellence Group of the Valencian Community.
