The University of Valencia is among the 200 best universities in the world in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to THE University Impact Rankings, an international ranking that measures the performance of universities in relation to the SDGs. The Valencian public university stands out in Objective 10, which promotes reducing inequality in and between countries, as it ranks 15th in the world.
In September 2015, the UN agreed on a set of global goals to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity as part of the 2030 Agenda. Among them are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with specific requirements to be met over the next 15 years. This month, THE University Impact Rankings ranks the UV among the top 200 in the world, a position it has held since the ranking began in 2019, and in the range 5 to 11 in Spain.
In addition, the University stands out in Goal 10, which aims to reduce inequality in and between countries, as it ranks 15th in the world and is the number 1 in Spain in this goal. “The University of Valencia is working from all areas to implement the SDGs in teaching, research, management and also for citizens and our environmental and socio-economic environment”, said the Vice Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Sustainability Elena Martínez.
This university also stands out in other objectives of the ranking, in particular in the 4th and 16th. The first aims to ensure an inclusive, equitable and quality education, and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, in which the UV is in the 24th position worldwide. SDG 16 seeks to promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies, and in this sense the Valencian public institution is in position 59. The UV also has a good position in goal 6, as it occupies the number 70 in the classification and which guarantees the availability of water, its sustainable management and sanitation for all.
This ranking, compiled by Times Higher Education magazine, is celebrating its third edition this year. At the national level, the top four centers in the general ranking are the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the University of Barcelona, the University of Jaén and the Pontifical University of Comillas. On this scale, the UV shares the rank 5-11 with the University of Girona, Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona or Miguel Hernández of Elche.
Globally, the University of Manchester tops the list. However, Australia is the country with the most universities in the first places of the ranking, as the following centres in the top 5 are all oceanic countries: the University of Sydney, RMIT University and La Trobe University. In Europe, apart from the institution of Manchester, the ranking is occupied by the University of Aalborg (Denmark), University College Cork, King’s College London and the University of Newcastle, the latter three in Britain.
