This wrought iron coffer dates from the 18th century. It was originally attached to the dividing wall that separated the chapel from the university auditorium, until it was removed in 1923. It was restored by the locksmith Felip Merino Ferrer, who left it free-standing and added the four spiral wrought iron legs that sustain it. This exceptional piece from the historical-artistic collection of the Universitat is linked to a specific moment of the institution’s history. At the end of the 18th century, against the backdrop of the Enlightenment, the curriculum proposed by Dean Vicente Blasco and the revised version of the financial by-laws were adopted.
The dean ordered the coffer to be built as a repository for the university’s cash income, the earnings of each faculty, the accounting ledgers and other documents. Five locks were installed, and the five corresponding keys were in the possession of the dean and the representatives of each of the four areas of study into which the Universitat was divided at the time: Medicine, Law, Philosophy and Science.
