Description

The Boardroom is presided by a magnificent portrait of the dean Vicente Blasco y García, painted by Mariano Salvador Maella in 1787. It was in this same year that Dean Blasco signed his famous new educational curriculum. He is represented in middle age, wearing the coral-colored winter habit worn by deans of the Cathedral of Valencia: ermine fur over a scarlet cape and surplice, with a lace collar and sleeves. In his left hand he holds a biretta, while his right hand rests on a manuscript with the title of his proposed curriculum. Next to this, against a dark background, we find an inkwell and pounce pot, or sander, a feather quill and a bell.

Vicente Blasco was named honorary life dean in 1790, allowing him to promote his reforms until his death in 1813. He is linked with the most advanced movements of his time, and he helped drive the Universitat de València towards the enlightened models of the moment. The university library and the present botanical garden were both created under his deanship, and the foundation was laid for the creation of a department of natural history and an observatory midway through the 19th century, both of which continue to fulfill their functions.
