The outing will take place on 18 May. The activity is free, but registration is required. Limited places!
One of the Demetrio Ribes Chair's most firm commitments is to appreciate the most representative infrastructures of the Valencian territory and to make them known to the general public. What better way than to do it in the same place we want to defend? On this occasion, we invite you to enjoy the impressive infrastructures belonging to two different systems. All of this accompanied by the Mediterranean breeze. We will enter the watchtowers of the coast from the mid-16th century and the Mar Greenway, the latter created from the original Mediterranean corridor, which dates back to the mid-19th century. Specifically, we will walk between the municipalities of Benicàssim and Orpesa. This is a historical-artistic and natural walk along the current Mar Greenway, guided by Luis Arciniega and Óscar Calvé, respectively director and researcher of the Demetrio Ribes Chair and authors of current research on the aforementioned infrastructures. The activity is free of charge, but prior registration is required. Limited places!
Remember that you can come in the organisation's bus or in your own vehicle to the place and time of the start of the activity, which will be the car park located a few metres from the Voramar Hotel (Benicàssim), at 10:00 am. Below there is an aerial photograph of this point. Please be aware that we offer travel facilities (bus).
Presentation
The Azahar coast is home to one of the most spectacular landscapes in the whole Valencian Community. On one hand, shared with the rest of the coastline, some towers of an extraordinary watchtower system, built in the mid 16th century to defend the whole kingdom against pirates and corsairs, have been preserved. These 'torres de guaita' (watchtowers), a matter of life and death at the time, are themselves sites of cultural interest. On the other hand, just a few metres away from these watchtowers runs a unique path designed in 1863, today known as the Mar Greenway, for the railway link between the cities of Valencia and Tarragona.
THE ROUTE
The route on foot along the greenway will start at the car park located a few metres from the Voramar Hotel, on the other side of the monumental bridge, at 10:00 a.m.
We will walk along the old railway line, passing over bridges, trenches and tunnels built in the 19th century. We will also visit two 16th century sea towers (de la Corda and Colomera). Once we have finished the greenway (5 km from our starting point), we will go to the Torre del Rey (King's tower), the final point and culmination of the excursion, where we will admire the uniqueness of this infrastructure of medieval origin, which in 1534 (after considerable alterations) was incorporated into the system. In short, this is a 6.5 km one-way route, with no major difficulties apart from the occasional slope, although it is not fully adapted for people with reduced mobility.
PLACES AND REGISTRATION
Registration for the activity will be free and a requirement for the smooth running of the route and the organisation of the group. There will be 80 places (54 of them could go in the bus),. After reaching this number, people will be put on the waiting list. You will receive an answer as to whether or not you have a place, which will be assigned in strict order of arrival of the applications. In case of not being able to attend, the cancellation will have to be made at least 48 hours before the activity.
On the registration form you will notice that there is a tab indicating ‘Bus place’. Please tick the appropriate box. Once completed, please send it to the following e-mail address: catedradr@uv.es
TRANSPORTATION AND MEETING POINT
You can travel either by bus offered by the Chair (free of charge) or by private vehicle. If you come by bus, the pick-up point will be Avenida Aragón, 38, in Valencia (the ‘block’ before the Guadalaviar School), at 8.00 a.m. Remember to mark the corresponding ‘X’ on the registration form!
At around 10 a.m. the bus will leave us at the starting point of the walk, ideal both for the course of the day and for the logistics of the event. Those of you who come by their own means can park at the starting point of the activity, in the aforementioned car park near the Voramar hotel. We have asked the local police and, in general, before 10:00 a.m. there is usually no problem to park there. In any case, it is advisable to arrive with plenty of time to spare.
LOCATIONS
At 8:00 a.m. the bus will pick up those who have chosen this means of transport at Avenida Aragón, 38 in Valencia.
The vehicle will take us to the starting point of the Walk itself, the car park next to the impressive Bridge of the Mar Greenway (which has the Voramar complex on the other side). This is where the walk starts at around 10:00 a.m. Here there is a car park for those who come by their own means, thus facilitating logistics.
The vehicle will pick up those who got a place on the bus at the end point of the route, at the Torre del Rey promenade, next to the Torre del Rey tower, at approximately 1:30 p.m. From there it will take us back to Valencia (Avenida Aragón, 38).
Please note that those travelling by their own means will have to consider individually how to get back to the starting point of the route (on foot, taxi, Uber, public transport...).
Considerations
- It is absolutely essential that you follow the instructions of the organisers.
- We are a very large group, and a high percentage of us will be travelling by chartered bus. Please fill in well the registration forms (phone number!) in case the team needs to send any kind of communication during the day.
- It is necessary that you enjoy the route in an environmentally appropriate way, being proactive in the preservation of the greenway, the towers and nature.
You carry out this activity under your own responsibility.
- You are responsible for your own safety and, indirectly, for the safety of other people in the area. When making decisions, use your conscience and good judgement. No smoking, throwing stones, running in dangerous areas, etc.
- People suffering from vertigo and/or claustrophobia should be warned about going through tunnels and over viaducts. The viaduct is not very high.
- To make the experience unforgettable and always positive, we remind you that haste, hunger, thirst and heat are bad companions. Take it easy, take some food (nuts, fruit...) and of course water. Don't forget to protect yourselves against the weather. Sunscreens, caps or hats will certainly prevent unpleasant consequences for those of you with sensitive skin. Finally, don't forget that we will be walking for a long time. Wear sports shoes or comfortable shoes.
