International migratory flows in Spain respond to the characteristics that Castles and Miller point out, in their now classic work ¿The Age of Migration¿, for 21st century migrations. In effect, later than in the rest of Europe, in the last two decades we have witnessed an increase in migratory flows to our country from different countries and cultures. We are not only witnessing an increasing heterogeneity of migratory flows but also an increasing diversity of migrants. We have flows of workers for low-skilled jobs, but also migrations of highly qualified people; there are those who migrate to improve their quality of life, ¿lifestyle migration¿, and there are those who do so to save their lives, asylum seekers and refugees; we have masculinised migrations and other feminised ones, although the role of migrant women is increasing. Given the space for free movement that the European Union represents, another very relevant distinction is made between internal migration within the EU and migration from third countries. Our group aims to respond to this heterogeneous reality through a diversity of lines of research focused especially on the Spanish context and, in particular, on the Valencian context, and which have a series of transversal axes, three of which stand out. Firstly, the incorporation of the gender dimension. Secondly, an intersectional perspective that takes into account the interweaving of social class, gender and ethnocultural factors. Thirdly, an orientation in line with the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and, more specifically, with SDG5, gender perspective, SDG10, Reduced inequalities, SDG11. More inclusive, safe and sustainable cities, and SDG16. Promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies.

- Urban integration of immigrants. Processes, spaces and actors. The evolution of urban insertion is addressed, from a multidimensional and holistic perspective, highlighting the conjunction between the cultural dimension (sociability, interethnic relations), the socioeconomic dimension (housing and services) and local policies.
- Intercultural relations and glocalisation. This line of research is based on understanding relationships in glocalised contexts, in the sense of local manifestations of global processes and dynamics (commodification, geo-strategic conflicts or socio-economic or socio-environmental crises, among others). Racism, xenophobia and discriminatory practices based on the construction of otherness are manifestations of conflict that are addressed here, and whose local manifestation can be enhanced or articulated by global processes. In the opposite direction, forms of cooperation, reciprocity, relativism and solidarity can also operate. Relational networks, associations and social networks are basic aspects of the insertion process of both immigrants and their children, which are approached from this perspective. The processes of construction of collective identifications are also addressed, from an intersectional approach that, in addition to ethnicity, considers other variables such as gender, class, age and sexual orientation. Understanding the influencing factors and the dynamics that are generated in contexts of intercultural contact is fundamental to exploring the construction of intercultural adjustments or processes of cultural and social accommodation that are characteristic of a coexistence that contributes to social cohesion. A construction that operates locally in a political, socio-affective, socio-economic, socio-spatial and identity and cultural dimension and that is not alien to a global context.
- Globalised rurality. Agricultural work, immigration and transformation of rural areas. In recent decades, various agricultural areas have undergone a dual process. On the one hand, the central role of immigrants in agricultural work; on the other, the changes that their settlement and that of their families generate in villages and rural areas. This line of research focuses on both issues with special emphasis on the territory of Valencia in particular, and the Mediterranean in general, although with a historical perspective that includes cases with an international outlook.
- Transnational mobility strategies. The 2008-2014 Great Recession and the covid-19 pandemic have shown the socio-structural problems of our society in the face of which a diversity of transnational mobility strategies have been activated, both for the native population and the immigrant population: The emigration of young autochthonous people who left with the Great Recession and who, in general, respond to a qualified profile. The re-emigration of the settled immigrant population with Spanish nationality to European or third countries. The circular migration of seasonal agricultural workers in the Spanish countryside, especially from Eastern Europe and North Africa. The processes of return of autochthonous emigrants. We are interested in understanding the effects of the recent crises ¿ of a rather structural nature ¿ on these migratory dynamics, their characteristics and specificities, as well as the strategies used by these migrants in their processes of integration, permanence, circulation or return.
- Migration and the labour market.Migrant workers have inserted themselves into an increasingly polarised and fragmented labour market. Although there is a wide heterogeneity of immigrant workers, the vast majority have entered the labour market and the productive structure "from below", with a high sectoral concentration and in low-skilled jobs, regardless of the qualifications of the person who performs them. This type of insertion and their working conditions, with rates of temporary employment, overqualification and unemployment that are much higher than those of the native population, are dealt with along these lines. Although the idea that immigrants take jobs away from the native population is false, it is no less true that our productive structure has changed and that, as in other European countries, it can be described as an ethnofragmented structure in which the position occupied depends not only on qualifications and experience but also on ethnocultural origin. All this has profound labour and social implications which are the subject of research in this line.
- Intra-European migration. The creation of the Schengen area and the abolition of internal borders between the member states of the European Union has encouraged and facilitated new intra-European migratory flows. Their specificity is the recognition for these migrants, in many areas, of rights very similar to those of the autochthonous population. This makes them an updated version of the migratory flows internal to each country. In the framework of this new mobility space, we investigate the different existing migratory flows: the consolidated flows of economic emigration from the South to the North of Europe, mostly led by young people; the flows of "lifestyle migration" from the North of Europe to the South and the most recent migrations from the East of Europe to the South, as well as the internal migrations in the South of Europe. New migrant profiles, multidimensional motivations and complex mobility strategies are the main research themes of this line.
- Migrant groups in situations of exclusion.A segment of immigration faces conditions of precariousness and social exclusion. A social insertion on the margins that manifests itself in different degrees of residential exclusion, social rejection, administrative irregularity, subsistence economic activities, etc. In this sense, Romani migration is a particular case in point. It is a community-based, family-based migration, with high levels of poverty and social stigmatisation at origin and destination. Adequately capturing these phenomena is of particular interest for the development of inclusive social policies. The ethnographic perspective, combined with other techniques, is suitable for this purpose, facilitating the approach to a reality that is often invisible to the usual statistics and records. This line of work addresses aspects such as their migratory projects, residential integration, economic strategies and sociability and social participation, paying attention to the factors that hinder or favour their access to and normalised use of public services and, in short, their social integration.
- International Retirement Migration. It focuses on the analysis of migrations involving retired and, therefore, elderly people, mostly from Northern European countries (United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, etc.). They are very large groups in the census, which often overlap with tourist movements. They are mainly located on the Mediterranean coast, although in recent years they have spread to inland areas and the Cantabrian coast. Due to their origin, socioeconomic status and dispersed residential integration, they have different integration dynamics from those of economic immigration. This means that, at times, they are characterised as migrations in priviledged conditions. In the same way, they usually create an associative network that allows for different intragroup needs, ranging from social, cultural, political and health needs, although they also turn back to the host society.
- Skilled migration. The study of skilled migration is a line of research with a long history which has had a great impact in social sciences since the mid-twentieth century. In those times, studies adopted structuralist approaches that were of predominant relevance in social sciences, characterising displacement as the "brain drain". The issue subsequently faded from the scientific field and political agendas, but has been revived in renewed scenarios in recent decades. In this sense, it is worth highlighting: a) the consolidation of a global economy in which knowledge, information and technological innovation became basic inputs for economic growth; b) the increase in skilled migration itself, in absolute terms and relative to the volume of migrants; c) the theoretical debate that has incorporated multidimensional approaches from a transnational perspective (for example "brain circulation and brain exchange"); d) the map of countries of origin and destination has diversified in line with a general trend in international migration flows; e) in this regard, Spain has become an exporter of skilled migration flows, especially since the last economic crisis after the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. Therefore, it is a novel subject, still very little studied in our country and with great potential for the economic development of the Valencian Community and Spain
