Since 2000, when this line of research began in the Department of Basic Psychology, a continuation of Motivation, Theoretical and Applied Areas led by Dr. Luis Mayor and in which the current director has participated since 1987, research has been carried out in two main areas. On the one hand, our primary interest in studying motivational and emotional processes as well as psychological aspects directly linked to them, such as well-being and health. The second area falls within the field of application in which studies are usually focused and which corresponds to sport, physical exercise and motor activity (performance). As pioneers in this field, we have contributed both to basic research, for example, to determine the relationships between precompetitive anxiety and performance, in the short term, but with long-term demotivation, and to the relationships between progress and improvement in performance goals (especially sports) and eudaenomic well-being, as defined by Carol Ryff. In general, we analyse the relationships between performance, especially with this physical-sports component, and the motivational and emotional factors that form them, also seeking to give coherence and connection to all the motivational variables that participate, creating and building a theoretical model of connection. This has also led to an applied and intervention model and that is metaphorically called Canton's Giraffe Model, applied from the perspective of positive psychology and, specifically, coaching strategies, focusing more on development and overcoming than on attention to deficiencies or disorders. This line of research has been and continues to be closely linked to its subsequent application in the professional field, contributing to the development of the specialisation from the General Council of Psychology of Spain (CGPE). Theoretical-conceptual contributions, from some of the studies that make up this line, have been used to define this specialisation, establish its competencies and even its structural development through the generation of a professional division, with a national and international impact (FIAP and EFPA).
