Degree in English Studies

  • Be familiar with a literature in a language other than the main Degree language.
  • Demonstrate communicative and social competence in the English language (oral and written comprehension and expression, communicative interaction and mediation that includes correct grammar and style).
  • Develop a critical ability to explain literary texts in English and to identify aesthetic conventions, movements, periods, genres, authors and works in English language and their modes of production.
  • Translate at a basic level from language B to language A.
  • Relate geographical and historical aspects and the most relevant institutions in the Anglophone world to contemporary society and culture.
  • Describe and explain theoretical and practical aspects of English phonology, lexis, morphology, syntax, text and discourse.
  • Describe and explain diachronic processes in the English language and the problems associated with this field and describe the fundamental changes regarding different linguistic aspects.
  • Describe the mechanisms of the acquisition of a second language and apply strategies and resources in the teaching and learning English language and literature including English for specific purposes.
  • Identify geographical, social, discoursive and genre and sex varieties of the English language including both literary and non-literary registers.
  • Know the grammar and develop communicative competences in Spanish.
  • Know the grammar and develop communicative competences in Catalan.
  • Know the grammar and develop communicative competences in (a) foreign language(s).
  • Get to know the fundamentals of the Latin language and classical culture through its texts.
  • Know and apply the currents and methodologies of linguistics.
  • Know and apply the currents and methodologies of literary theory and criticism.
  • Interrelate different areas of humanistic studies.
  • Have and apply general knowledge in humanistic areas related to this field of study.
  • Compare and analyse the constituents of one's own language with those of other languages.
