Amelia Valcárcel
Philosopher, writer, and one of the greatest exponents of feminism and equality, the wide and multifaceted curricular career of Amelia Valcárcel has lead her to be configured as one of the most representative women of the feminist and progressive ideology of this country, occupying responsibility positions in some institutions and organisms, and developing as a full university professor in Moral Philosophy and Politics an extraordinary work in the world of teaching and research. In the field of research she can be considered pioneer in some thematic areas through avant-garde research projects in her time as: “Metafísica y desarrollo científico-cultural en 1983” (“Metaphysics and scientific-cultural development in 1983”); or the project “Paridad” (“Equality”), financed by the Institute of Women and addressed to the analysis of the spaces with exiguous presence of women; “La herencia de la ilustración” (“The heredity of the Enlightenment”) or “Sobre mujer y poder” (“On women and power”). Also, her publications are numerous and diverse. To name some of them: “Ética y poder: Querer y no poder en Historia y Sociedad” (“Ethics and power: Wanting and not being able in History, Language and Society”), “Del vosotros al yo” (“From you to I”), “Mujeres y hombres en la formación del pensamiento occidental” (“Women and men in the development of the Western thought”); “Los intelectuales y la política en la España actual” (“Intellectuals and politics of the contemporary Spain”).

Saskia Sassen
Saskia Sassen is full university professor in Sociology with a great international prestige in areas such as the social, economic, and political dimension of globalisation, and the urban sociology. Her research fields reach, also, phenomena as the immigration, the global cities, and the changes in the liberal state as a consequence of the current transnational conditions. One of her most significant scientific contributions was her concept of global city, accepted nowadays and used in the entire world. To Sassen, the global cities form networks that concentrate the decision power and the new relations between territory, authority, and rights, making blurred, this way, the role of the borders. In those cities there also are big inequalities and social segregation that have, among other causes, the differences in the communications technology access. Her work examines in depth the functioning of the metropolitan areas where the control and the management of the world economy, its function as a centre of power and knowledge, as well as the characteristic inequalities of these social models are exerted. She has a scientific production of first-level.

Paul Preston
Professor Paul Preston has a recognised scientific career that credits him as one of the most significant specialists in the contemporary history of Spain. He is professor at the University of Reading, at the Queen Mary College of the University of London, and currently holds the Príncipe de Asturias Chair of the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is author of over sixty works dedicated to the contemporary history of Spain, some of which have exercised a notable historiographic influence. Also, his work as a historian has reached a wide social, national, and international projection. His deep link with Universitat de València has made easier the international projection of the Valencian culture and research.

The wide research career of professor Preston continues a long tradition, the tradition of the British Hispanism, in which we can find such important figures as Raymond Carr, Hugh Thomas, or Martin Blinkhorn, among others. Some of his works, as “La destrucción de la democracia en España” (“The destruction of democracy in Spain”) or “España en crisis” (“Spain in crisis”), constituted in their time, as well as a very solid and valuable contribution, the opening of research lines of great influence in a moment in which the Spanish historiography was starting to break free from its bonds imposed by the dictatorship. Among his later important contributions his biography of Franco, currently the most solid and with biggest international projection of all the existing biographies, is very significant. Recently he published “El holocausto español. Odio y exterminio en la guerra civil y después” (“The Spanish holocaust. Hatred and extermination in the civil war and after”), an extensive study that has become an unavoidable reference for the knowledge on the violence in Spain in that period.
