The Principal of the University of Valencia, Esteban Morcillo, and the major of Burjassot, Jordi Sebastiá, have inaugurated this Tuesday 11 December, the streets around the School of Engineering (ETSE) named in honour to the engineer Julio Cervera and the Principal Francisco Tomás.
Julio Cervera Baviera was an illustrious engineer, who born in Sogorb in 1854, studied Physics at the University of Valencia, he entered and graduated in the Military Academy of Engineers and developed several projects as the tram or the electric lighting of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In 1889 he was commissioned to know the communication tests of radio carried out by Guillermo Marconi. He worked with him and with his assistant George Kemp and he obtained different patents in wireless telegraphy. In 1902 he established between Xàbia and Eivissa, the first broadcast of radio speech made in the world. Moreover, in the early XX century Julio Cervera was interested in technical education and its reform and in 1903 he contributed to the creation of the Escola Lliure d’Engineers of Valencia (Free School of Engineers) one of the first experiences of distance learning.
Francisco Tomás Vert, Full University Professor of Physical Chemistry of the University of Valencia, was born in the city of Valencia in 1943. As a researcher he has the highest scientific recognition in his area and also has a brilliant trajectory in university management until his position of Principal of the University, during 2002 and 2010. During his tenure as a Principal he consolidated the prestige of this University as one of the best universities of Spain in attracting students and scientific production. He also fortified the Burjassot-Paterna Campus with the creation of research institutes and the Science Park of the University of Valencia (PCUV). And prompted the creation of the School of Engineering of the University of Valencia (ETSE) in Burjassot as a centre to organize and promote engineering studies and research that this University develops since many decades.
