El Aula de Cinema invites to rediscover Shakespeare's ingfluence on cinema

The "Aula de Cinema" of the UV exhibits from 7 to 28 May a selection of films about the work of William Shakespeare, considered a key figure in world literature, which will be screened at the Conference Hall Sanchis Guarner of the Faculty of philology, Traducció i Comunicació every Wednesday at 18 am.

The film, as each and every one of the arts, could not ignore the influence of Shakespeare, having numerous and varied film versions of almost all his theatrical productions. This cycle, which includes four unorthodox 'Macbeth' variations: "The Taming of the Shrew", "Hamlet" and "Othello", confirms the universality of the English writer and his vast influence in shaping the most ludicrous stories.

The cycle begins on Wednesday, May 7, with the screening of 'Throne of Blood' (Kumonosu-jo, Akira Kurosawa, 1957), based on the universal tragedy 'Macbeth', one of the most recognizable works of Shakespeare, whose validity has lasted until today. This is demonstrated by its infinite and varied film adaptations, from versions of Orson Welles as a starting point of argument in gangster films, and the version of Akira Kurosawa, set in feudal Japan, is one of its most accomplished representations. The Japanese director brings the story of betrayal and lust for power, initially attributed to the historical figure Macbeth, to the Japanese society of the sixteenth century. In the story, the General Taketori Washizu tries to become the Lord of the Northen Castle through murder, inspired by a strange old woman and instigated by his wife.

On Wednesday May 14 will screen the 'teen movie' 'Ten Things I Hate' (10 Things I Hate About You, Gil Junger, 1999), inspired by 'The Taming of the Shrew', comedy English bard on the submission of women their husbands, one more sign of the universality and versatility of its arguments. Adapted to the context of an American high school in the late nineties, the film presents the life of the popular Bianca and his not so sociable older sister, Kat. Due to the strict rules of conduct imposed by their father, Bianca will be forced to find a boyfriend for her sister Kat, to make her father let her to go to the High School Ball in couple. It will bring to both sisters and their couples to diverse tangled situations. Its premiere supposed the rise to fame of the actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, who became teenagers stars due to their interpretations in the film.

The cycle will continue on Wednesday, May 21 with the pass and the subsequent conversation about "The Lion King" (Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, 1994), adapted for children by Disney from 'Hamlet' a classic of world literature , Shakespeare's great tragedy about revenge and its consequences for a family. The film, one of the most representative of the U.S. 'major', tells the story of Simba, a young lion, and the quest to regain the throne that was taken from his father by his uncle Scar, also responsible for his banishment. The film, one more example of the pervasiveness of the Shakespearean universe in culture, standed out especially by its soundtrack, for which the film received two Academy Awards in the categories of Best Original Soundtrack (Hans Zimmer) and Best Original Song (Elton John and Tim Rice) and the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical in 1994.

The closing of the cycle will take place on Wednesday May 28 with the screening of the classic black film "A Double Life" (George Cukor, 1947), which tells the progressive loss of judgment of a theatre actor during the performance of 'Othello', in which the main character becomes unable to distinguish between reality and fiction with dire consequences. He standed out in his time interpreting Ronald Colman, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor as well as the quality of a narration that supossed Cukor's nomination for Best Director and of the writing staff in the Original Screenplay category. 

As usual in the "Aula de Cinema" programming at the UV, each session will have a preview and a subsequent conversation, in which the audience can participate. All screenings will be in original version with subtitles in Spanish and admission is free up to the permitted capacity.
