Francisco Gimeno presented a book after his findings about the original of ‘El compromiso de Caspe’

Yesterday, June 28th, Francisco Gimeno Blay, full professor of paleography and diplomatics, read the lecture ‘Caspe: seiscientos años después’ (Caspe: six hundred years after). There, he presented his book ‘El Compromiso de Caspe (1412). Diario del proceso’, which is the product of his findings and identification of an original diary of the sessions celebrated in Caspe between March 29 and June 28, 1412. Both events took place in the parish church of Santa María la Mayor at 20:30.

Yesterday, June, 28, Francisco Gimeno presented the book El Compromiso de Caspe (1412). Diario de un proceso. Estudio introductorio edición crítica y notas al cuidado de Francisco M. Gimeno Blay. This same day, the six hundred years of the king Fernando de Antequera are celebrated.

Universitat de València has found the original diary of the Compromiso de Caspe’s conversations (1412). The diary shows the negotiations which allowed to reach a political consensus regarding different territories in the Aragon Crown. These negotiations led to the election of Fernando I de Antequera as new king.

They had gone unnoticed to the researchers due to a dating mistake in the catalogue (carried out in 1913) which located the manuscript in the XVI century.

Professor Francisco M. Gimeno Blay, full professor of paleography and diplomatics at Universitat de València, who was preparing the edition of the Compromiso’s diary, found out that the Universitat’s manuscript was written in the same year as Compromiso was.

Up to this moment, only three copies of this document were known (kept in the Archivo de la Corona de Aragón archives and in that of Segorbe cathedral, respectively).

Despite the document’s deterioration, Universitat de València’s Libraries and Documentation Service began its restoration, which has its main goal in the stabilization of the support and book binding. This would bring the book’s function back.
