
From Monday, The General Foundation’s Martínez Guerricabeitia Trust has one of Agustín Ibarrola’s new graphic works. It is a work dated from 1966 which aims to reflect the political repression, the oppressed masses and and the regime’s violence. The work of art can be recognized by its dark and distinct expressiveness shapes. The architect José Luis Ros donated the work to the Trust.
Esteban Morcillo, Principal of the University and president of the Trust, has stated to be ‘very grateful to José Luis Ros for this donation aimed at increasing the artistic holding of the University of Valencia. It is a very important donation both from the artistic and the social points of view.’ Antonio Ariño, Vice-Principal for Culture, Planning and Equality has announced the next public presentation of the work and has underlined ‘the importance of this donation, which adds to the collection we already have by Agustín Ibarrola.’ José Luis Ros, who is a full professor in the Project Department of the Technical School of Architecture, said that ‘the work is in good hands. I hope both the Valencian and the Spanish people can enjoy it.’

Besides the work just added, the collection donated by the Martínez Guerricabeitia family to the University in 1999 has an oil on canvas by Agustín Ibarrola and seven graphic works.
From mid century, the Agustín Ibarrola’s work is a reference in the Spanish art history . He founded, among others, Equipo 57, he was an active engraver in the movement Estampa Popular and a pioneer in the social realism.
At the end of 1959 and thanks to the outstanding engraver José Ortega, Ibarrola discoverd in Paris the engraving and its possibilities to disseminate the social sphere of art. This would encourage him to promote the movement Estampa Popular in Vizcaya from 1961. Being an active communist, he is taken to jail from 1962 to 1965.
