The Institute of Human Rights and the Chamber of Notaries present today solutions to evictions

The Institute of Human Rights of the University of Valencia (IDH) is organising along with the Chamber of Notaries of Valencia, a conference to discuss and propose solutions to evictions, which will count on the participation of the ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, Valencia's chief judge, Pedro Viguer, and counsel of the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages, María José Guiralt, among other experts. The event takes place on Thursday, 28 February, at the Chamber of Notaries of Valencia (C. Pascual and Genís 21) with free admission with limited capacity.

The directors of the conference, Consuelo Ramon (IDH's director) and Cesar Belda (dean of the Chamber), will open the conference at 16:15, followed by Soledad Becerril, who will discuss the roleof the Ombudsman in the crisis of evictions. At 17:00, the counsellor for Infrastructures, Isabel Boning, will talk about social and administrative measures to alleviate the effects of the evictions. Half an hour later, the notary Joaquín Borrell will address the issue of improvements in the constitution of estate guarantees and extrajudicial executions. At 18:15, the consel for the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages, María José Guiralt, will talk about the right to housing in times of crisis. Then at 18:45, Valencia's chief judge, Pedro Viguer, will make a presentation focused on legislative proposals to ensure the right to housing. Finally, at 19:15, Constitutional law professor and member of IHR, Fernando Flores, will close the conference discussing the evictions and the necessary guarantees of human rights.

Created in 2005, and currently directed by Professor Consuelo Ramon, the Institute of Human Rights of the University of Valencia has received the Mention of Excellence
from the Ministry of Education for his PhD in Human Rights, Democracy and International Justice. In 2008, the IDH obtained aid within the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 program. The institute is part of a project formed by twelve research groups from different Spanish universities and coordinated by the Institute of Human Rights Bartolomé Carlos III University of Madrid. The selected project is called 'Time of rights' and its lead investigator is Gregorio Peces-Barba. Consolider-Ingenio 2010 is the main method of financing for the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation 2008-2011 for high quality projects. It was the first time that a team of researchers from the legal field obtained such aid, mainly aimed at scientific contexts away from the Humanities and Social Sciences.
