Professor Juan I. Collar, in the Meeting of Excellence VLC/CAMPUS in Physics

Detalle del cartel.

The research microcluster of VLC/CAMPUS ‘Desde la vanguardia de la física de partículas, nuclear y astropartículas hasta la transferencia en computación distributiva, imagen y aceleradores en medicina y tecnologías marinas’ (‘From the avant-garde of particle physics, nuclear and astroparticles to the transfer in distributing computing, image and accelerators in medicine and marine technologies’) (PANTICAM), organises the Meeting of International Excellence VLC/CAMPUS in Physics ‘Busca la materia oscura’ (‘Looking for dark matter’), in which Professor Juan I. Collar from the University of Chicago will participate. The conference-colloquium will be the 11 December at 12:30 in the hall at the Science Park of the University of Valencia.

Juan I. Collar is a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago. Researcher and contributor at the CERN, he is currently heading the Chicagoland Observatory for Underground Particle Physics (COUPP). Collar has published several research articles and his works focus on the development of innovative methods to detect WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) and other hypothetical subatomic particles that could provide an explanation for the dark matter of the Universe.

For almost 80 years, it is known that most of the Universe consists of a type of matter that neither emits nor absorbs light nor can other kind of electromagnetic radiation, and that it is called “dark matter”. Several astronomical observations have confirmed its existence through verifying the gravitational force exerted on luminous bodies (stars, galaxies, clusters of galaxies…), and, nevertheless, it is not known yet what is its nature. In this conference-colloquium, Professor Juan I. Collar will explain the most recent research and experiments on the dark matter of the Universe and the research on new type of fundamental particles, which can possibly interact with the “conventional” matter.

The Meetings of International Excellence are an initiative of the International Excellence Campus VLC/CAMPUS Programme and are funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. The aim of these annual programmes is to promote the talent through conferences, meetings and dialogs between Nobel prizes, excellent scientists and researchers on training in the specialisation areas of the CEI VLC/CAMPUS.
