The public image of Las Fallas under debate today and tomorrow in La Universitat

Detail of the poster’s session.

Las Fallas conversations, in La Nau, organised by the Debate Forum of the Universitat de València and the Associació d’Estudis Fallers (ADEF) propose this year to think about the public image of Las Fallas, a festivity with multiple aspects such as the festive sociability, the monument’s construction, the artistic expressions, the social component or the holiday calendar. This complexity complicates the representation of such a diverse festivity that in many occasions cannot be fully represented.

Under the generic title “La imagen pública de las Fallas” (The public image of las Fallas), these sessions will be held on 14 and 15 December, at 19:30, at the historical building of La Universitat, at La Nau Cultural Centre, and could be followed via Twitter using the hashtag #FallesNau.

The first session, “Impresiones inmediatas. Diseño, publicidad y redes sociales” (Immediate impressions. Design, publicity and social networks) will be about the image this festivity offers about itself generally (which is the festivity’s image) and particularly (which is the image built by the commissions when social networks offer a biggest projection and control capacity of the Fallas’ as never before).

To do so, designers and publicity creatives as well as content managers of the Fallas’ commissions will participate. The first debate will be moderated by the journalist Juanma Játiva and will include the participations of Xavi Calvo, graphic designer of the Menta studio; Olga García Salguero, responsible of the social networks of the Falla de la Plaza del Pilar; Enrique Pernía, president of the Asociación de Empresas de Comunicación Publicitaria of the Valencian Community; and Laura Llopis, Publips company. The “zero row” will be composed by Ibán Ramón, graphic designer; Xavier Serra, creator of mamaltdefalles.com; Miguel Arraiz, architect; Virginia Llorente, architect and creator designer of typical valencia; Alberto Gay, responsible of the social networks of the Falla Ripalda-Beneficiencia; and Alejandro Lagarda, tourist guide.

The second session “El reto de contar la fiesta. Fallas y medios de comunicación” (The challenge of telling the festivity. Fallas and media) will be on the representation of Las Fallas by the media and on its communicative, imaginary and ideological implications. That is to say, how media create and feed back the social imaginary of the festivity. Moderated by the journalist Fernando Morales, with the participation of Ángeles Hernández, journalist; Quique Collado, journalist; Vicente Molins, journalist and responsible of the Abasedebē communication agency; and Alfons Lorenzo, journalist and writer. In addition to this, at the “Zero row” will participate Joan Castelló, journalist of the Agencia Efe; Marcos Soriano, journalist; Lola Soriano, journalist of “Las provincias” newspaper; Julio Tormo, journalist; and Juan Meneses, director of “Don fallerita”.

This eleventh edition of Las Fallas conversations in La Nau, in collaboration with several institutions and entities: the Junta Central Fallera, the Gremio Artesano de Artistas Falleros, the Universitat Politècnica de València, the Valencian Museum of Ethnology of the Valencia Council, the Interagrupación de Fallas de Valencia, the Federación de Fallas de 1A, the Federación de Fallas en Especial Ingenio y Gracia, and the Grupo de Fallas Innovadoras y Experimentales.
