Academic, scientific or professional interest: Sustainable chemistry can be defined as the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. As in other areas, the objective of sustainable development should be achieved with the development of new technologies that provide society with the products that we need in an environmentally responsible way. The association between chemical and environmental hazards is a constant in all modern societies. This is paradoxical, since there is probably no other science which has contributed more, simultaneously, to the preservation of the environment and the welfare of humankind. In this context, the different actors involved in the design, manufacture, marketing and use of chemicals (companies and entrepreneurs, technicians, researchers, policymakers, consumers ...) have gained a clear awareness of the need for a sustainable development. The most efficient approach and with greater long-term impact is the one provided by the Sustainable Chemistry: the development of products, technologies, methodologies and clean chemical processes that: consume the least possible amount of raw materials and that these materials are, if feasible, renewable, strictly limit the consumption of energy resources, minimise produced wastes, and that these wastes are harmless and finally, which do not generate avoidable risks.
