On Tuesday 4 October, at 5:45 p.m., the Hall of Residence holds the 12th edition of a meeting that aims to commemorate the International Right to Know Day, which, on this occasion, will focus on the Constitutional right (article 20.3) of social groups to access the media.

The opening ceremony will begin at 5:45 p.m., in the Assembly Hall of the Principal Pesset Hall of Residence, and it will be given by Andrés Gomis Fons, Director-General of Transparency, Citizen Services and Good Governance; Ricardo Garcia Macho, president of the Council for Transparency, Access to Information and Good Governance of the Valencian Community; Joaquín Martín Cubas, co-director of the PAGODA Chair for Good Governance, Participation and Open Data; and Joan Lloret Pastor, president of the Association for Citizenship and Communication (ACICOM).

This will be followed by a round table discussion on ‘The right of social groups to access the media today’, with the participation of Julia Sevilla Merino, president of the Citizens’ Council of the Valencian Media Corporation (CVMC); Jorge Castellanos Claramunt, professor of Constitutional Law, Political Science and Administration at the Universitat de València; Núria Portillo Poblador, director of the UPV Chair in Open Data (Catedrades); Carmen Rodríguez García, head of Communications at the Valencian NGO Coordinating Committee for Development; and Manuel Lubary López, vice-president of CAVE-COVA (Confederation of Neighbourhood Associations of the Valencian Community).

Finally, there will be a debate on ‘The challenge of turning the Valencian Community into a benchmark for the exercise of the Right of Access of social groups to the media’. Participants will include Jose Ignació Pastor Pérez, member of the CVMC Citizens’ Council, founder and honorary president of ACICOM; Pilar Moreno Aguado, president of XEMV (Network of Valencian Local Radio Stations); Rafael Alborch Bataller, member of the CVMC Governing Council; and Jose María Vidal Beltran, president of the Audio-visual Council of the Valencian Community.

This symposium has been organised by the Association for Citizenship and Communication (ACICOM), the PAGODA Chair for Open Government, Participation and Open Data of the Universitat de València and the Valencian Department of Transparency, Social Responsibility, Participation and Cooperation of the Valencian Government, and the Inter-University Institute for Local Development, with the collaboration of the Principal Pesset Hall of Residence.

The conference aims to promote the exercise of the right of access to the media by social groups, in order to draw attention to and strengthen the Valencian and national associative fabric. In short, the aim of this meeting is to promote plural and diverse information, which includes the point of view of social organisations, allowing them to adopt a critical view that improves society.

To this end, “a wide range of experts on the subject and with responsibilities have been brought together to develop an event with a multifaceted vision of reality, and at the same time to formulate proposals to make the Right of Access to the Media by Social Groups a reality”, according to the organisation.
