
The Psychosocial Research Unit of Organisational Behaviour (UNIPSICO) of the University of Valencia (UV) has translated and adapted to Valencian the questionnaire CESQT or Spanish Burnout Inventory, a tool to assess the levels of the work burnout syndrome, considered by the WHO as a health problem resulting from chronic stress in the workplace. The adaptation for non-university teaching staff, applied by specialists in Psychology, has been coordinated by Pedro R. Gil-Monte, professor of the Department of Social Psychology at the UV.
This work is the result of the collaboration project signed by the University of Valencia and the Valencian Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INVASSAT, Valencian Government). The adaptation, validated on a sample of 1359 teachers, will allow professionals whose mother tongue is Valencian to identify and assess more reliably their emotions, their attitudes and their psychological state of health related to work. It will also help to make more reliable diagnoses about this health problem.
This adaptation increases the visibility of Valencian in the scientific community and supports the UV’s commitment to the promotion of the Valencian Community’s own language and to the linguistic rights of workers in the Catalan-speaking language area. The research has been published in Informació Psicològica, a publication of the Official College of Psychology of the Valencian Community.
The research is designed to improve the assessment of different psychological facets of the individual (emotions, cognitions, and attitudes), dysfunctional behaviours, and work-related psychosomatic disorders, as it decreases the refusal of some people to respond to psychological tests that are not written in their mother tongue.
The Questionnaire for the Assessment of the Work Burnout Syndrome (CESQT), in the international version, has been designed to assess burnout. The instrument consists of 20 items with which to assess the symptoms of the syndrome: low enthusiasm for work, psychological exhaustion, indolence and feelings of guilt related to behaviour and negative attitudes developed at work, especially towards the people with whom employment relationships are established. It is translated and adapted into different languages, such as German, Czech, English, Italian, French, Polish, Portuguese and Tamil, among others.
The adaptation and validation of the CESQT to Valencian allows INVASSAT to use the methodology of evaluation of factors and psychosocial risks “UNIPSICO”. This technique, developed by Professor Pedro R. Gil-Monte, aims to assess factors and psychosocial risks of personnel of the Valencian Government and identify and prevent exposure to occupational hazards that may affect their health.
In the adaptation and validation study to Valencian, Marta Llorca-Pellicer, associate professor of the UPV and doctoral student of the UV, and José Luis Llorca Rubio (INVASSAT), who are also research staff of UNIPSICO, have participated as co-authors.
Burnout research
Pedro R. Gil-Monte’s research has focused for more than 30 years on the study of the burnout syndrome, on the quality of work life and on the prevention of psychosocial risks at work. He has received the Distinction of the Chilean Society of Work and Organisation Psychology (SCHIPTO) in recognition of his outstanding career and his important contributions to training and research in the field of work and organisational psychology (October, 2016 ) and the Recognition of the Federal University of Paraíba, Health Sciences Centre (João Pessoa, Brazil) for its significant contribution to international scientific production and for the development of an instrument for the evaluation of burnout syndrome (May, 2019).
As director of UNIPSICO, he has received the 2014 Distinction for carrying out research work in occupational risk prevention granted by the Valencian Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INVASSAT).
