The UV research groups (GIUV) are regulated in the 1st chapter of the Regulation ACGUV48/2013, which explains the procedure for creating new research structures. They are basic research and organizational structures that result from the voluntary association of researchers that share objectives, facilities, resources and common lines of research. These researchers are also committed to the consolidation and stability of their activity, work in groups and the capability to achieve a sustainable funding.

The research groups included in the previously mentioned Regulation are registered in the Register of Research Structures of the Universitat de València (REIUV), managed by the Office of the Vice-principal for Research. The basic information of these organisms can be found in this website.

Description of research activity:
The research group conducts its research activity in different lines of work: Childhood and environment line Cohort study in collaboration with other research centres (INMA project) to share methodologies and knowledge on the effects of the environment on children's health, to describe the level of exposure and pollution during gestation and early childhood, to assess the role of the most common environmental pollutants and dietary protective factors on foetal growth and neuro-endocrine-immune development in order to develop environmental health indicators. Air pollution and health line Study of the relationship between air pollution and health effects, developing multi-centre studies. Studies are also carried out to evaluate the impact of pollution on the health of the population. Weather and climate line Evaluation of the relationship between climatic factors and meteorological variables, especially ambient temperature and health, as well as public health measures that can minimise the impact of foreseeable future climate changes. This impact is evaluated from different perspectives, ranging from environmental pollution (through biomarkers of exposure) to climate change (heat and cold waves), as well as the impact of certain technologies affecting the environment (mobile telephony, power lines, etc.).

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Objetivo general: Estudiar la relación entre factores ambientales y la salud humana. Objetivos específicos: Evaluar el impacto de los contaminantes ambientales en la salud de la población, con especial atención en poblaciones vulnerables, como los niños, las mujeres embarazadas, las personas de edad avanzada, migrantes, las personas con menos recursos económicos, sociales o educativos, mediante la realización de estudios observacionales utilizando las técnicas y métodos de la epidemiología ambiental. Estimar el grado de exposición a los riesgos ambientales de la población, en especial la residente en la Comunidad Valenciana, mediante el desarrollo de marcadores biológicos, medidas ambientales, cuestionarios y sistemas de información. Analizar la relación entre exposición a contaminación atmosférica sobre la salud de la población. Examinar los efectos asociados a temperaturas extremas (olas de calor y frío), así como las posibles consecuencias sobre la salud del cambio climático.
