The UV research groups (GIUV) are regulated in the 1st chapter of the Regulation ACGUV48/2013, which explains the procedure for creating new research structures. They are basic research and organizational structures that result from the voluntary association of researchers that share objectives, facilities, resources and common lines of research. These researchers are also committed to the consolidation and stability of their activity, work in groups and the capability to achieve a sustainable funding.

The research groups included in the previously mentioned Regulation are registered in the Register of Research Structures of the Universitat de València (REIUV), managed by the Office of the Vice-principal for Research and Scientific Policies. The basic information of these organisms can be found in this website.

High Energy and Relativistic Astrophysics - HERA

Description of research activity:
This research group is focused on the study of scenarios related with high energy and relativistic Astrophysics (HERA group). Our focus is on galactic and extragalactic relativistic jets, their radiative production and dynamical effect on their environments. The approach we follow is based on the use of relativistic hydridynamics (RHD) and magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) codes. These codes have proved very useful in the understanding of extragalactic and galactic jet physics and evolution (see, e.g., Martí 2019, Perucho & López-Miralles, 2023). Furthermore, we develop analytical models and participate in the interpretation of observational results from these objects. Regarding international collaborations, the group keeps long-term collaborations with the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie in Bonn and the University of Würzburg (both in Germany), and currently also the Leibniz Institut at Potsdam. Other collaborations include different institutions in Spain (Universitat de Barcelona, Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (Granada), Finland (Aalto) or Sweden (Chalmers). Scientific-technical goals:
  • Our aim is to contribute to the understanding of the various astrophysical scenarios in which relativistic and high-energy processes take place through the use of numerical simulations, theoretical models and observations.
 
Research lines:
  • Extragalactic relativistic jets at parsec scales.Study of the properties of extragalactic jets in the innermost regions of active galaxies, such as stability, or the role of the magnetic field in the dynamics of the jets. In addition, we collaborate in the interpretation of radio interferometric observations of these objects.
  • Relativistic flows in binary stars.Study of the evolution of relativistic jets and the interaction between relativistic pulsar winds and stellar winds in high-mass binary stars. These scenarios are interesting as potential sources of high-energy radiation.
  • Computational relativistic magnetohydrodynamics.Design of algorithms for the numerical solution of the equations of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics.
  • Extragalactic jets at kiloparsec scales.Study of the evolution of extragalactic jets and the relevant factors in the evolution (power, mass loading by gas clouds and stellar winds within the progenitor galaxy, development of instabilities...). Effects on the host galaxy and its environment.
  • The role of galactic activity through cosmic time.This line of work tackles the role that galactic activity may have played in the host galaxy and cluster evolution through the evolution of our Universe.
