The UV research groups (GIUV) are regulated in the 1st chapter of the Regulation ACGUV48/2013, which explains the procedure for creating new research structures. They are basic research and organizational structures that result from the voluntary association of researchers that share objectives, facilities, resources and common lines of research. These researchers are also committed to the consolidation and stability of their activity, work in groups and the capability to achieve a sustainable funding.

The research groups included in the previously mentioned Regulation are registered in the Register of Research Structures of the Universitat de València (REIUV), managed by the Office of the Vice-principal for Research and Scientific Policies. The basic information of these organisms can be found in this website.

Geography of Tourism, Socio-territorial Resilience and Spatial Planning - TRESOR

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2026-011

Description of research activity:

The TRESOR research group at the University of Valencia aims to contribute to the development of the Geography of Tourism, particularly in aspects related to resilience and the spatial planning of tourist territories. Specifically, its research is oriented towards the management of tourist spaces from a broad perspective (natural resources, built cultural resources, intangible assets, etc.), the impact of climate change on tourist destinations, the different territorial tourism models, with a special emphasis on urban and rural areas, territorial marketing, the design of sustainability indicators, among others. The focus of TRESOR is research is territory-oriented; therefore, the local context and social and environmental development are a priority. In this regard, the Valencian Community is the main territory of study, although not the only one. Moreover, the group has extensive experience in studies related to Economic Geography, Rural Geography, and Urban Geography. In addition to tourism activity, other topics of interest for the group include climate risks, social capital, geographic data, among others.

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Territorial Tourism Models: To analyse the impact of tourism on territory from a sustainable development perspective, in order to identify its social, economic, and environmental effects, and to define territorial tourism models derived from the historical evolution of tourism activity and its current characteristics. In addition, the objective is to propose actions aimed at improving quality, territorial integration, and the sustainability of tourism, contributing to a balance between tourism development and territorial cohesion.
  • Heritage valorisation and territorial management of tourism destinations: To analyse natural and cultural heritage and its relationship with the territorial organisation of tourism destinations as key elements of tourism attractiveness, promoting their knowledge, dissemination, and valorisation. This objective aims to contribute to the design and management of sustainable tourism products, respectful of heritage, environmental quality, the surrounding environment, and local identity, with particular attention to land-use location and patterns, as well as to processes of renewal and regeneration of mature tourism destinations. Furthermore, it seeks to support integrated destination management and the adaptation of tourism supply models to existing territorial dynamics, ensuring the conservation of resources and development scales appropriate to host territories.
  • Policies, strategic planning and territorial management of tourism: To analyse and develop public policies and methodologies for the strategic planning and management of tourism areas from a sustainability perspective, at both local and regional scales, incorporating participatory planning processes and territorial governance. This objective includes the study of the implementation and expansion of short-term tourist accommodation and its territorial, social, economic and functional impacts in urban and rural areas, with particular attention to touristification, gentrification, access to housing, changes in land use, and transformations of the social and productive fabric. Furthermore, it aims to develop spatial and temporal analysis methodologies to identify areas under higher tourism pressure, assess the effects of regulatory policies, and support the design of balanced management strategies, compatible with the right to housing, social cohesion, and territorial sustainability.
  • Social capital and social innovation in tourism and territorial management: To analyse the role of social capital and social innovation processes in the management of tourism and territory, paying particular attention to actor networks, institutional cooperation, citizen participation, and innovative local initiatives. This objective seeks to identify and assess collaborative governance experiences and participatory models applied to tourism destinations and rural and urban territories, as well as their contribution to sustainability, social cohesion, and local development. Furthermore, it aims to design and transfer methodologies that strengthen social capital, promote tourism-related social innovation, and enhance the capacity of territories to address processes of change, conflict, and adaptation through inclusive and resilient approaches.
  • Adaptation of tourism territories to climate change and associated risks: To study the vulnerability and adaptive capacity of tourism territories in the face of climate change and associated natural risks, such as floods, heatwaves, coastal erosion, or extreme events. This objective focuses on analysing the exposure of infrastructure, tourism resources, and populations, and on proposing adaptation and mitigation measures integrated into territorial and tourism planning. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to the design of more resilient tourism destinations, incorporating risk management, climate adaptation, and environmental sustainability as key elements of tourism policies and strategies.

Research lines:
  • Tourism, Territory and Urban Transformation. One of the group¿s core lines of research is the study of touristification, tourism pressure, and their territorial impacts, especially in medium-sized cities and large urban areas. The research analyses phenomena such as: - Tourist accommodation (short-term rentals) and digital platforms. - Tourism saturation and socio-spatial conflicts. - Tourism, residential, and green gentrification. - Post-COVID impacts on urban destinations. This line combines quantitative methodologies (GIS, databases, territorial indicators) and qualitative approaches, with a strong comparative and applied orientation.
  • Rural Tourism, Local Development and Territorial Governance. The group analyses tourism as a key tool for local and rural development, especially in peripheral, depopulated, or economically transitioning territories. The research focuses on the evaluation of rural development policies, such as the LEADER approach and other European programmes, the role of social capital, local networks, and social participation, as well as the study of participatory tourism governance models, economic diversification, and the strengthening of territorial resilience.
  • Territorial Planning, Sustainability and Public Policies.Territorial and urban planning from a critical perspective, assessing public policies related to tourism and urban projects, urban and regional development strategies, proximity services, accessibility and territorial equity, as well as the assessment of socio-economic and territorial impacts.
  • Applied Methodology and Cartography.Advanced methodologies for territorial analysis are developed, based on the intensive use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital cartography, and multiscalar spatial analysis techniques. These tools enable the construction of indicators of tourism pressure, vulnerability, and territorial resilience, as well as the assessment of complex spatial dynamics. The aim is to generate replicable and transferable methodologies, designed to support tourism and territorial planning, public decision-making, and the sustainable management of territory.
  • Risks, Vulnerability and Tourism in Global Change Contexts.Analysis of territorial vulnerability, climate risk, and their relationship with tourism, including: floods, climate change and exposure of tourism land; natural hazards and the social perception of risk; and tourism and territorial resilience in the face of climatic, health, and demographic crises.
