“What can a social movement? Reflections on the categories of politics”
For some years, we have faced a European scale of efforts related to the strong protest movements against neo-liberalist ravages, in order to reformulate categories of action and political theories around both binary, vague and fascinating oppositions: ‘homeland’ against ‘caste’, ‘people’ against ‘oligarchy’. Gradually, we can see how the notions of ‘social classes’ disappear along with specific and minor fights. What does this return mean for a unitary conception of the social body and for the traditional concepts of political philosophy: ‘General Interest’, ‘Common Wealth’, ‘Nation’? Which are the productive effects which also become potential dangers for these categories and their usage in political parties which pretend to erase the left-wing and right-wing dichotomy? How to currently understand social transformations supporting and criticising parties which try to regenerate democratic demands?
