An unknown disease has spread through our city. There is no war, no murder... we lived in a state that closely resembled happiness, and suddenly, for no apparent reason, without prior disease, people begin to die at home, in church, at the corners of the streets, in public squares. On top of that, these are not isolated cases. They are growing more numerous. Evil has come at the time we thought that there was nothing to fear. There are houses where entire families are killed at the same time. Cousins and brothers die at the same time, by the same disease, because of the same anguish that follows the same pain...
