Open registration for the sessions on School Absenteeism and Right to Education

School absenteeism is a serious educational and social issue that affects millions of students in the Valencian Community each academic year. Young people are assisted by dozens of specialists in educational centers, local corporations, and social entities whose work is essential to tackle the non-attendance to educational centers and its implications. This phenomenon is present through the whole compulsory education period, with a heavier impact on pre-teen and teenagers. There are many reasons for this: lack of family support, demotivation towards formal education, social exclusion, lack of appreciation for school, school bullying, and overprotection, amongst other reasons. Consequently, absenteeism features different profiles and derivations -familiar, social, and cultural- with far-reaching impact. Therefore, its prevention, intervention and treatment must be a priority for all the agents involved for the purpose of allowing every student to access the required degree to develop a suitable professional career and a comprehensive development. Schooling is a joint competence of the educational administration, city councils, and, in the worst cases, the law courts. It is a complex environment with entities from very different areas involved, all regulated by specific rules and with their own working arrangements. Coordination between all of them is crucial and complementary to treat each case individually, at a global level and contextualised. Taking into account all the factors mentioned above, the missing research group, including the Research Group POLISOC (Education Policies, Interculturality and Society) of the Universitat de València, organises this I Sessions on School Absenteeism and Right to Education, based on the conviction that the utility -academic, social and educational- to generate a communication area for all the intervening actors in the absenteeism in order to exchange experience and knowledge, to advertise good practices and affective interventions, and, to the extent possible, to facilitate collaborative schemes and networking.

Sessions are free and open to the general public. An attendance certificate will be delivered.
