What does it consist of?

The extension of the deadline for submitting a doctoral thesis consists of a single, exceptional one-year extension to formalise the submission of the thesis.

This possibility is regulated in Article 3.4 of Royal Decree 99/2011, which regulates the official doctoral programme.

However, each doctoral programme may establish specific requirements or conditions for granting the extension, in accordance with its internal regulations.

Special regime for students who began their studies before the 2023-2024 academic year:

In accordance with the first transitional provision of Royal Decree 576/2023, students who began their doctoral studies before the 2023-2024 academic year may benefit from the following regime:

  • Full-time students: may request up to two extensions of one year each.
  • Part-time students: an extension may be authorised for a period of two years, which may be extended exceptionally for one more year.
What are the effects?

Granting the extension:

  • Extends the deposit period for an additional year.
  • Maintains the doctoral student's status as an active student for all purposes.
  • It entails the obligation to formalise the corresponding enrolment and pay the current public fees.
  • It entails continuity in the annual evaluation process.
  • It allows access to institutional services and applications (RAPID).
