The extension of the deadline for the deposit of the doctoral thesis consists of an exceptional one-off one-year extension to formalise the deposit of the thesis.
This possibility is regulated in Article 3.4 of Royal Decree 99/2011, which regulates official doctoral studies.
Without prejudice to this, each Doctoral Programme may establish specific requirements or conditions for the granting of the extension, in accordance with its internal regulations.
Special regime for students who began their studies before the 2023–2024 academic year:
In accordance with the first transitional provision of Royal Decree 576/2023, students who began their doctoral studies before the 2023–2024 academic year may opt into the following regime:
- Full-time students: may apply for up to two one-year extensions.
- Part-time students: an extension may be authorised for a period of two years, extendable exceptionally by one additional year.
The granting of the extension:
- Extends the deposit period for an additional year.
- Maintains the doctoral student's status as an active student for all purposes.
- Implies the obligation to formalise the corresponding enrolment and pay the current public fees.
- Entails continuity in the annual evaluation process.
- Allows access to institutional services and applications (RAPID).
