Background of the University School of Business Studies

The University School of Business Studies was originally the former School of Commerce. In the eighteenth Imagen del Rei amb els comerciantscentury the first official regulations for the organization of business studies emerged. The Degree in Commerce was created by a Royal Decree on September 8, 1850, leading to Schools of Commerce being opened in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, La Coruña, Malaga, Santander, and Seville. Two decades later, the Valencia School of Commerce was founded on January 19, 1902, and since then business and commerce degrees have been offered continuously in our city throughout the last century up until today.

The Spanish General Education Act of 1970 restructured the former Schools of Commerce into University Schools of Business Studies which offered first cycle university courses in this field of study. Thus, in 1972, the Valencia School of Commerce became part of the University of Valencia under the name of University School of Business Studies, offering a 3-year diploma in Business Studies. In the 1998-1999 academic year, a new centre in the town of Ontinyent (Alicante) was opened and also a 3-year diploma in Tourism was included in the University’s degree program.

Background of the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies

Mural d'EconomiaThe Faculty of Economics and Business Studies, created at the end of 1966, offered degrees in Business Administration and Management, and in Economics, which were new degrees established following the former Bachelor's Degree in Political, Economic and Business Studies of the 1953 study program. In addition, within the framework program signed with French, English and German universities, the Faculty offered a Degree in European Economics and a European Degree in Business Management. Furthermore, in the 1999-2000 academic year, a Degree in Actuarial Science (second cycle university course) was introduced into the study program.

Establishment of the Faculty of Economics

By agreement of 28 March 28, 2000, the Board of Trustees of the University of Valencia approved the proposal to establish the Faculty of Economics (Facultat d’Economia) taking into account the favourable report of the Spanish Universities Board in its session of June 7, 2000, and the Interuniversity Board of the Valencian Community also having taken cognizance of the said proposal.

The Decree 144/2000, which created the Facultat d’Economia and closed the former Faculty of Economics and Business Studies and former University School of Business Studies of the University of Valencia, was published in the Official Gazette of the Valencian Government (DOGV) dated October 5, 2000.
