Last Monday, 1 June, during his visit to Valencia as a member of the jury for the Rei Jaume I Awards, Professor Eric Maskin visited the Faculty of Economics, where he delivered a seminar entitled “An Introduction to Mechanism Design”.

Students and staff were quickly captivated by Professor Maskin’s brilliant and accessible teaching style as he introduced, through relevant examples, the fundamentals and applications of mechanism design theory, a field of economics that plays an important role in ensuring that individuals reveal truthful information and act in a mutually beneficial manner consistent with socially desirable outcomes.

The session was moderated by Professor Amparo Urbano, who provided a brief overview of Professor Maskin’s extensive academic background, together with Professor Jordi Paniagua. Both encouraged active participation throughout an extensive question-and-answer session, during which Professor Maskin once again demonstrated not only his excellence and kindness as a teacher but also his tireless dedication to the promotion and development of economic research addressing real-world societal challenges.

Eric Maskin is the Adams University Professor and Professor of Economics and Mathematics at Harvard University. He was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Economics, jointly with L. Hurwicz and R. Myerson, for laying the foundations of mechanism design theory, and has made significant contributions to game theory, contract theory, social choice theory, political economy, and other areas of economics.
