How is electricity generated?

Although it seems a clean energy, electricity is a transportation system. The energy sources used to generate electricity do not respect the environment. In this graph can be seen that 80% of energy is produced by nuclear and burning fuels. For this reason we say that electricity produces greenhouse gases.

 

 

People say fluorescent tubes should not be turned off in short intervals. Is it true?

This is a false myth.
In a test of 100,000 on/off switch, no difference in the average life of traditional bulbs are noticed, nor to low consumption or halogen.

Furthermore, it is better to turn of the lights when they are not in use, even for absences of less than a minute, to reduce the consumption.

People say computers should not be turned off in short intervals. Is it true?

The only reason is that it takes long to boot. Turn on and off does not affect the life of the computer.
Turn off your computer if you leave it for more than 30 minutes.

Does the switched off appliances consume?

Yes, more than we tend to think.

Previously, devices have power switches to cut off the current physically. But lately, many devices (PCs, monitors, printers, TVs...) work with buttons, although it seems to turn off the computer, it really kept waiting, running some power all the time. Usually, power strips with switch are the best option.
