Nic (Annette Benning) and Jules (Julianne Moore) are a lesbian couple that live with their two teenage children: Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and Laser (Josh Hutcherson), result of artificial insemination. They are obsessed to meet the biological father, someone named Paul (Mark Ruffalo), who donated semen to a clinic when he was young. Just turned 18, Joni makes use of the right to apply for information on the father and decides to meet him.
