WHAT LANGUAGES ARE USED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA?

The University of Valencia is committed to multilingualism and language equality. In fact, it is the most multilingual University in the Valencian region. Catalan (usually referred as valencià) is the University's language and it is official together with Spanish, while English is considered as a working language. All three languages are used in both teaching and research. Campus life is a good opportunity for you to start socialising in Catalan and Spanish with people from different backgrounds.

IN WHAT LANGUAGES ARE LECTURES TAUGHT?

The degree courses at the University of Valencia have the same percentage of lectures taught in Catalan and in Spanish, besides the University is increasing the number of lectures taught in English every academic year. The languages of teaching depend on each degree, but the tendency is to organise multilingual degrees. This makes it easier for graduates or incoming students at the University to get the languages skills needed for working in Catalan, Spanish and English.

WHICH LANGUAGES CAN I USE?

If the subject is language or literature, you will normally have to use the language being studied. In all other cases, regardless of the language in which the lectures are taught, you have the right to use, when speaking or writing (oral interventions, writing papers and exams, etc.), any of the two official languages. Therefore, if the lecture is taught in Catalan and you are learning the language, you can start using it at your own pace in the different activities. Apart from that, if English is the language of teaching, you are invited to use it in all the activities.

WHAT OTHER LEARNING LANGUAGE RESOURCES DOES THE UNIVERSITAT OFFER?

The University offers you free courses, conversation groups and resources to learn Catalan, Spanish, English and other languages. Contact or visit the Language Learning Centre (Centre d'Aprenentatge de Llengües or CAL) on your campus and we will inform you about all the resources available.

HOW DO I TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPORTUNITY?

We recommend enrolling in some of the subjects taught in Catalan, besides the ones offered in Spanish. The more contact you have with Catalan, the better your language skills will be at the end of the course. Moreover, you will be able to certificate your knowledge of Catalan, Spanish, English and other languages by taking the official language exams. This is a great opportunity to meet local people from Valencia and to improve your Catalan and Spanish.
