Mireia Vives Martínez. Degree of Modern Languages and Literatures

Mireia Vives Martínez

7 june 2018

Studying the degree of Modern Languages and Literatures has been a a very enriching experience that has allowed me to grow both personally and academically.  Initially, I chose to study a philology because I have always liked learning languages. But once I started my university studies I realised that what I really love is literature. In that sense, the degree has met my expectations. Through these studies I have been able to deepen my knowledge of the German language, literature and culture from a holistic approach. Thanks to the courses on German literature, as well as those focusing on different literary genres, I have been able to acquire a solid philological and literary basis from which to continue my future education.

However, the subjects in Modern Languages and their Literatures are very varied. Along with those related to literature, there are also subjects applied to the linguistic field, as well as courses to explore other possible fields of the philology, such as translation or audiovisual arts. An aspect to be considered is that, as being a foreign language, if you have not previous knowledge of the language, requires a major dedication, but that is something that with time and effort can be achieved.

In short, it is not a question of starting the degree knowing what one wants to do, but rather, as long as one has humanistic concerns and an interest in other cultures and languages, the degree in Modern Languages and Literatures is a first step in defining one's own interests, providing the necessary basis for furthering one's knowledge in the field that interests one most.
