Noelia de la Torre Martínez. Hispanic Studies

14 november 2018

Since I was in high school I had my mind set about what I wanted to study at university since I loved the Spanish language and literature. My level of satisfaction with Hispanic Studies could not be higher: it has not only surpassed my expectations, but I also believe that it has a wide range of employability options. Without a doubt, Hispanic Studies Degree has been one of the best experiences in my life. The major part of students that start this degree believe that the only professional possibility is teaching in high schools.

During the four years of the degree you learn that this (teaching in high schools, in language schools or at university) is not the only alternative: there are also others like research, publishing and proofreading, forensic linguistics, writing, etc.

Throughout the degree, as well as throughout life, there are subjects that provide experiences. Modules as “Spanish for Foreigners”. “General Linguistics”, “Colloquial Spanish”, “Literature and Modernity in Latin America”, “Spanish Literature”, and “Spanish Theatre in the Golden Age” among others, marked a turning point. These are modules that provide expertise and knowledge that you had not taken into account before, but great sages had already thought.

In turn, both the optional "Curricular Practices" and the subjects where a large number of practical classes prevails, not only encourage your study, but also your degree of experience, since you can put into practice everything you have learned in the classroom.

Keeping in mind the path I have walked during these years, I have my mind set: my future is research and teaching, since research has played a major role completing my educational training. Thus, I appreciate the four years I have been studying this degree because if it were not for them, I could not have found my career: researching but also teaching; something I completely ignored could be done before starting it.
