Recent catastrophes, both natural and political, have highlighted the extreme vulnerability of women in contexts of global crisis. Climate change, wars, forced migrations, and economic crises not only affect society as a whole, but disproportionately impact women, especially those in the most vulnerable situations. In addition to the social and humanitarian injustices arising from these catastrophes, the silencing of women’s voices and their representation in the media, political discourse, and even in literature becomes even more pronounced. Faced with this reality, it is essential to create spaces for discussion within academic institutions, especially universities, to talk about and reflect on the role of women in disaster contexts and their representation in literature and cultural productions. These have been, and continue to be, key mediums for capturing, interpreting, and preserving women’s experiences in times of crisis, as well as serving as tools for resistance, empowerment, and transformation.
This symposium seeks to offer an academic and cultural response to the urgent need to create spaces for thought and debate on how women are represented in literature in the context of catastrophes, and what role they can play as agents of change in post-disaster reconstruction.
