The goal of this symposium is to bring for the first time in Spain the work of the filmmaker Haneda Sumiko (1926-), probably the most important female filmmakers from Japan, a pioneering author and one of the most prolific documentary makers in the postwar period. Haneda Sumiko was promoted to director at the influential documentary production company Iwanami Eiga, where she was involved in creating medium and full-length films between 1950 and 1980. Then, she continued to make more personal and experimental works as an independent filmmaker until 2012. This symposium addresses the thematic and stylistic diversity of Haneda's oeuvre, which will be examined from multiple angles: gender, film theory, authorship, transnationality, performing arts, art history and aging studies.
