The Universitat de València will offer, in the 2026–2027 academic year, the first edition of the Master’s Degree in Data Journalism, Multimedia Narratives and Artificial Intelligence. This online degree is designed to train specialised profiles in data-driven investigative journalism, visualisation, multimedia production, web narrative design and the critical use of AI tools in newsrooms and digital environments.

The programme, worth 60 ECTS credits, will be delivered online through the Universitat de València’s Virtual LAB and is organised by the Journalism Area of the Department of Language Theory and Communication Sciences. Pre-enrolment will remain open until 15 September 2026, and the course is scheduled to begin in October 2026. The academic directors are Professors María Iranzo Cabrera and Lorena Cano Orón.

The programme responds to the transformation of the journalism sector and to the growing demand for professionals capable of working with large volumes of information, verifying data, building visual and interactive stories, and applying artificial intelligence responsibly in news production processes. The training combines theoretical content, synchronous sessions, asynchronous resources and project-based learning, with practical challenges linked to real situations in a digital newsroom.

One of the main distinguishing features of the master’s degree is its teaching staff, made up of leading professionals in the fields of data journalism, visualisation, narrative innovation and AI applied to communication. Most of the lecturers are linked to leading media outlets and organisations in the sector.

The curriculum takes an integrated approach to the main areas of contemporary digital journalism, including mobile journalism, database-driven investigation, transparency and access to information, visualisation and cartography, multimedia narratives, web design, automation with artificial intelligence, and the development of interactive projects. The master’s degree culminates in a Master’s Final Project, in which students must develop an applied project combining data, visualisation, audiovisual production, digital design and artificial intelligence tools.

The degree is aimed at graduates and active professionals interested in specialising in data journalism, digital narratives and journalistic innovation. The programme prepares students for roles such as data journalist, multimedia narrative specialist, data analyst applied to communication, designer of visualisations and interactive products, AI content developer, digital project editor, newsroom transformation consultant, audience analysis manager, or researcher in digital communication and computational journalism.

With this new academic offering, the Universitat de València strengthens its commitment to journalistic innovation, information quality, transparency and the training of professionals prepared to meet the technological, ethical and narrative challenges of the contemporary media ecosystem.
