This unit aims to study some of the neurodevelopmental disorders that affect children the most. Currently, we have started a line of research focused on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) which affects 1 in 110 children, which has meant a dramatic increase in recent decades. The nuclear characteristics include persistent deficits in social communication and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviour, interests and activities. Along with neural alterations responsible for the behavioural diagnostic markers, there often appear immune and metabolic abnormalities that could contribute to abnormal neurobiological development. Many neurobiological and cognitive processing features could reflect the existence of an extreme male brain. One of the goals of the study is to test the extreme male brain theory developed by Baron-Cohen from a neuropsychological perspective on children with ASD and their parents. The second goal is focused on the development of psychobiological profiles that allow a multidisciplinary intervention more accurate for individual characteristics.
