The European Research Council has opened the call for proposals for the Starting Grant scheme. The deadline for submission is 14 October 2026.

What are ERC Starting Grants?

ERC Starting Grants offer funding opportunities for talented early-career researchers looking to carry out innovative, world-class projects in any field of research.

Who can apply?

Researchers of any nationality with 0 to 10 years of experience since the award of their PhD and a highly promising scientific track record. Extensions to the eligibility period can be granted under specific circumstances, such as maternity, paternity, illness, etc. Please refer to the ERC Work Programme 2027.

What does the funding cover?

Up to €1.5 million over a 5-year period, plus an additional €1 million to cover relocation costs, equipment, access to major facilities, or fieldwork. The grants cover up to 100% of eligible direct costs, plus a 25% contribution towards indirect costs.

What type of projects can be submitted?

Any research proposal that is original, groundbreaking, and has the potential to deliver significant scientific, social, or economic impact. There are no predefined thematic priorities or restrictions.

Where must the research be carried out?

At a public or private organisation (known as the Host Institution) based in an EU Member State or Associated Country. The Host Institution must provide suitable conditions for the researcher to lead the research and manage the budget independently.

How do you apply?

Applications must be submitted online via the European Commission Funding & Tenders Portal. The deadline is 14 October 2026.

How are applications evaluated?

Proposals are evaluated by international peer reviewers based on scientific excellence as the sole criterion. Evaluation takes place in two stages: Stage 2 evaluates the full proposal and includes an interview with the candidate.
